Ready for First Third Edition Coursebook + Answer Key + Webcode for Audio & Macmillan Practice Online (2015 Exam)
- Product Reviews
The coursebook contains a generous amount of materialReviewed by Jon Clayden, Academic Manager, Eurocentres, London
Includes the 2015 changes to the Cambridge English: First (FCE) exam – most noticeably the changes in some of the writing and speaking tasks eg Part 3 of the speaking: the collaborative task (see p36 of the coursebook)
The coursebook includes a code giving student’s access to Macmillan Practice Online (MPO) which usefully includes two practice tests which students could do at home or in a computer room at school. The audio for the coursebook is also available (MP3) which is handy and something students often ask teachers for, and don’t get!
Teachers also get extra materials - in addition to the teacher’s book – with a DVD-ROM that includes progress test material (mostly exam-style) that can be edited and so adapted to students’ needs. For less experienced teachers there are short videos where the author Roy Norris talks about the different parts of the exam and the teaching approach of the coursebook and the other course components. It’s very thorough…but obviously one would need to devote a certain amount of time to viewing it and I’m not convinced many teachers would be motivated to do that.
Ready for First is a course that could easily be used by inexperienced teachers and teachers with little or no knowledge of the exam as the coursebook contains a wealth of exam training and information. Informative ‘Ready for…’ sections, covering each part of the exam, give advice, information and exam practice. For example on p42-45 of the coursebook is a ‘Ready For Use of English’ that guides students through each part of the paper demonstrating ‘what to expect in the exam’.
Included in the Teacher’s Book are sample writing answers to tasks set in the coursebook which also have examiners’ comments – helpful for both students and teachers.
A topic-based wordlist at the back of the coursebook provides a vocabulary record of key words from each unit. This is great for students when they come to revise for the exam and for teachers wanting to recycle lexis throughout the course.
It is always very clear what the focus of each lesson is and how it relates to the exam. Although exam preparation coursebooks are inevitably text-heavy, Ready for First manages to be visually attractive by using up-to-date, brightly-lit photos and tasteful colours and fonts (compared to some other rather dry looking exam coursebooks). This helps to make the book more visually engaging for younger learners preparing for the Cambridge First for schools exam.
