Language Acquisition in Study Abroad and Formal Instruction Contexts

by Perez-Vidal, Carmen Published by John Benjamins

Published 2014.

This book provides a very thorough and wide-ranging study of the impact on language acquisition of two different contexts of learning, Study Abroad and Formal Instruction, as experienced by advanced level higher education language learners in Europe, having English as their target language. Results are discussed in the light of SLA main research concerns both theoretical and methodological. It follows learners longitudinally over 2,5 years and analyses the short and the long-term progress accrued after a period of formal instruction at home followed by a compulsory three-month-long sojourn abroad. It examines the participants' oral production, with an interview and a role play, productive and receptive phonological abilities, listening comprehension skills, written production, lexico-grammatical development, and changes in attitude, motivation and beliefs towards language learning, as well as intercultural awareness. The participants' onset levels before going abroad, contact patterns with English speakers, and variation in length of programmes are other factors scrutinized.
