This is a collection of state-of-the-art papers in the field of syntactic reconstruction. It focuses on a range of topics which are representative of current debate in historical syntax and syntactic reconstruction. The novelty and merit of the present book is that, in contrast to most previous work on diachronic or historical syntax, it combines the perspectives of the traditional philological research on syntactic reconstruction with the insights of modern theoretical syntax, as it is emphasised in a foreword by Giuseppe Longobardi. The volume includes articles by well-recognized researchers in historical linguistics and diachronic syntax. Syntactic reconstruction is discussed from multiple angles, including the perspectives of traditional historical linguistics, language contact, generative linguistics, and typological and variationist research. In the articles, languages from a diverse range of families are discussed, including (Ancient) Indo-European, Kartvelian, Caucasian, Sino-Tibetan and Turkic.
