Marathi is the official language of Maharashtra, including Mumbai. It is the only Indo-Aryan language whose structure has been influenced by the Dravidian languages. The first grammar of Marathi was written by Father Stephens (1640 A.D.), the first English traveler to Goa- India. It marks the beginning of a grammatical tradition for Modern Indian languages. This book presents an extensive account of Marathi phonology, morphology, word formation and syntax, all cast in a modern framework. It succinctly describes the accentual system, the compound verb forms, unique pronominal anaphors, the complexity of agreement due to the split ergative system, and unusual pronominal marking.
