Sometimes teachers, whether consciously or unconsciously, want to hide the details of instruction from their students. But is this covert approach really helpful to learners?
Open teaching is the idea that teachers need to throw aside the curtain and involve their learners in what is happening in the classroom. They need to use learners, arguably their greatest resource in the classroom, and engage them in discussion about their learning. But where to start? In this book, the authors make the case for overt instruction before presenting practical steps and activities teachers can use to move gradually from overt to covert instruction. Not only will the teachers learn how to formulate effective goals, but also use them as a basis for discussion.
