The long treatise ascribed to Duns Scotus, Thomas of Erfurt is presented here for the first time in a German translation. He is regarded as the culmination of speculative grammar, one of the weightiest formations of late medieval language theory. Meaning of this text should be but not only for medievalists. Dai said the treatise in recent theoretical approaches plays a central role, showing its rediscovery by Charles S. Peirce, Martin Heidegger or the structuralist Roman Jakobson. Translation initiation and therefore are not only as an aid to understanding the treatise, but also as a reference to its historical and systematic basic character.
Basic character here, especially Thomas's theory of a grammatical significance of the language. Thereafter, in all languages??, the same grammatical forms and functions, and can so far universally as the significant behaviors "of" language (significandi modes) are described. Certainly this is the view of a medieval universalism, which holds a little more understanding of language as of today. Hence lies the real challenge of the treatise, which caused not only by his contemporaries for violent defensive reactions, but also has not lost any of their Provokanz, in his insight that the grammatical forms have a fundamentally different structure of meaning than the lexical inventory of a language .
