This book presents a new and innovative theory on the origin of the Germanic language that proposes solutions to key problems and has critical implications for cultural history. We present this theory within a unique and interdisciplinary perspective combining a reconstructed scenario of language contact, supported by with linguistic evidence, and made plausible within a mosaic of extra-linguistic evidence. In contrast to other theories on the origin of Germanic and other languages that feature language contact, our theory follows the established methodology of contact linguistics. It identifies a contact language and reconstructs a contact and transfer scenario in detail. We also present parallels from well-studied cases as well as experimental evidence to support our theory. The book is of interest to scholars interested in the history of the Germanic languages and specialists on language contact.
